Herniated Disc Treatment

The bones of the cervical (neck) spine, thoracic (middle back), and lumbar (lower back) are separated by intervertebral discs.  The anatomy of the disc is as follows; the outside is made up of tough and fibrous materials while the inside or center is a spongy.  As the disc breaks down or degenerates due to traumas such as sports injuries, car accidents, or bad falls.  Sometimes these traumas can cause the soft center of the disc to push through the outer rings pressing against a nerve or nerves.  This can cause all types of symptoms usually found where the cause of the problem is and can continue into the extremities.

The good news is that chiropractic care may alleviate disc-related sciatica. Multiple studies document improvement in disc disorders with chiropractic adjustments to the spine (Lancet 1974; 1:352; Edizioni Minerva Medica 1985;53-58; Foundation for Chiropractic Education & Research 1991;57-59).

Another treatment that we provide in our office is non-surgical spinal decompression.  We have found that most patients respond very favorable to spinal decompression for herniated discs.  Here is a research article that shows how spinal decompression decreases pain and also increases the disc height.   http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1471-2474-11-155.pdf
