The most common Headache that we see in our office on a regular basis is a tension headache or termed an "occipital headache". Patients usually describe this headache as tension coming from the back of neck with pain sometimes behind or above the eye. Headaches can also come from whiplash injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.
Research is showing that headaches are reaching epidemic proportions, there is a study that shows that 76% of women and 57% of men suffer from at least one headache each month (MMWR 1991;40:331-38).
Another research study that had over 5000 participants showed that almost 40% of the cases originated in the cervical (neck) spine. Two thirds were due to malpositioning of the vertebrae, while the other one third from narrowing where spinal nerves exit the spinal cord (Wien Med Wochenschr 1994; 144:102-8).
Chiropractic has shown to have wonderful positive effect on occipital or tension headaches. (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1997;20:326-30.)
